The Cleveland Zoo is slightly different from other zoos in Ohio. It is not as old as the Cincinnati Zoo, or as hip and modern as the Columbus. It has a flavor all its own.
The animals are themed together, somewhat, by where they are from. This is nice except that at times seems random. The African animals are together, the Australian animals are too. The Northern Trek has bears, wolves, beavers, and other north American animals… along side camels and tigers. Yes they are all from the northern hemisphere, but when the other continents are viewed as separate spaces this seems odd to have all of one hemisphere as one theme. The even stranger part is the Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building. That’s right cats to the right, fish to the left, and monkeys in the middle.
The whole zoo seems to be in a state of change. Certain portions are reminiscent of older 70’s style zoos, with others currently being modernized. The most modern section, and the stand out attraction, is the Rainforest, an entirely separate building dedicated to the story of the world’s rainforests. The attraction houses many of the zoo’s smaller animals, reptiles, and insects. The vastness of plants inside the Rainforest and their inclusion with the animals makes a visitor feel as if they have actually traveled to the rainforest. The whole experience is one of the best in the state.
As the zoo changes and evolves rapidly the experience evolves along with it. So ever visit to the Cleveland Zoo may be different and unique.
Quick Tip: The best food, almost gourmet fast food, is inside the rainforest.
