The National Museum of the Great Lakes is part of the Great Lakes Historical Society. This museum opened in the Spring of 2014. It is a celebration and exploration of the great lakes. The museum is very hands on and has lots to feel and move. It is a great place for adults and kids because of the range of exhibits, laid out in a way that makes it easy to find and see all the exhibits. One moves between seeing ships, shipwrecks, exploration, settling, transportation, and industry. This museum will take a few hours to get through, but not so long that kids will get distracted or worn out. The museum has some great artifacts and replicas, that might not be seen at too many other museums. This museum has a unique perspective on history.
If one visits the museum in the summer they can also explore the S.S. Col. James M. Schoonmaker, which is next door to the museum. The Schoonmaker is a museum ship.
The museum does have a cost.
This museum is one that has a unique enough perspective, that is a must visit.
